Poaching
Introduction
Poaching is the illegal hunting of wild animals for profit.
In Africa there are three types of poaching:
1. Subsistence Poaching-for food, basic survival, and low profit.
2. Commercial Poaching-for medium profit.
3. Trophy Poaching-for high profit.
Hunger drives people to hunt animals and then sell them to feed their families.
The animals that they hunt are: some insects, rodents, birds, antelope, and warthogs. Poaching
is the illegal hunting of game. All poaching comes from either needing something or wanting something.
Some people of Africa mostly practice Subsistence Poaching to survive in the way they always have.
Unfortunately, poverty is high in Africa and the people need to look for ways to survive.
Commercial Poachers are focused solely on making money. They do not need these animals to
survive, but people who go for this type of poaching are in for a profit. The animals hunted
in this category range from rare insects to rhinos, and elephants.
People in Africa who poach to feed their families are in an unfortunate position;
most would not like to poach, but they must to be able to survive. It would be a major help
to the conservation of wild and endangered species if the people had alternatives to poaching,
to feed their families.
Another big help would be better conservation acts that protect Africa's wildlife, and the
acts should be better enforced. Why isn't this happening already? you say. Well,
great strides have been made in the past few decades, but the truth is that many people
just don't care. Better education about animals would help their situation.
