Dian Fossey:Queen of the Apes
1932-1985

Dian Fossey is famous for her activism in the conservation of the Mountain Gorilla in Zaire and Rwanda. After poachers killed her favorite gorilla, Digit, she set up what she called active conservation. She employed her workers to carry guns and shoot any poachers they saw. She went into their camps and confiscated tools and weapons and spoke directly against them and raised awareness. In 1985 she was found in her cabin, hacked to death.
